High backed carved Chair From the Guarage people of Jimma, Oromia, South West Ethiopia. mid to early 20th century.

Of a single block of indigenous Wanza timber. The distinctive design of the geometric open work pattern in the back rises from the bowl shaped seat resting on tripod legs are typical to Guarage style.
 
The high backed seats reflect the social status of the owner; indicating a special place for a highly regarded individual during community meetings or ceremonies. The chair is hand-carved and demonstrates a high level of wood working skill.
 
This chair has a beautiful tone, showing evidence of usage and wear as it shows a warm glossy patina along with smoothing of wood on the back and the seat. Style as a decorative occasional chair anywhere in the home.
